Lab Alumni
Merna Guirguis
Merna Guirguis is a fourth-year undergraduate student at the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV majoring in Biomedical Sciences. She is on the pre-med track aspiring to become a physician who specializes in oncology. She is also working as a medical assistant to gain clinical skills. Growing up she has played many instruments including the guitar and violin. As a research assistant she is learning how music can impact cognition and the different areas of the brain, which brings a unique view on its importance in utilization.
Madison Murphy
Madison Murphy is an Honors student majoring in Anthropology and World Languages (with concentrations in Spanish and Applied Linguistics). She currently works as a music teacher at American Education International and provides tutoring. Engaged on campus, she is vice president of the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV Anthropology Club and runs communications for the P.R.I.D.E. Alliance. She aspires to attend graduate school and teach in the Linguistics department at Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV. As the coordinator for the CALM lab’s Saxophone Respiration Study and piano teacher for the Child Study project, she examined the impact of wind instrument training on the respiration and cognition of individuals that have had COVID-19 or Long Covid. This novel program has led to beneficial collaborations with the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home and other local organizations.
Adrianna Garcia
Adrianna Garcia is a fourth-year student at the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV studying
Health Sciences with a split concentration in Biological Health and Social/Behavioral
Health and a minor in Biology on the pre-medical track planning to be a physician.
She is currently the Social Media Chair for Undergraduate American Medical Women’s
Association (UAMWA), serves her community as a Patient Care Ambassador at HCA Brandon
Hospital and works as a specialist at the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV Digital Engagement Center. Adrianna
comes from a choral and musical theatre background where she participated in various
performances, concerts, choral competitions since
she was 10 years old, including placing 3rd overall at the Festival Disney Choral
Competition. Adrianna is currently assisting with the Cognition and Coordination Across
the Lifespan in Music (CALM) Study and previously helped with the Musicians and Non-Musicians
Neural Responses During Music Listening, Imation, and Improvisation Tasks Study as
well as teaching for the jSax Film Criticism Class.
Isabella Ramsaroep
Isabella Ramsaroep is a senior undergraduate student at the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV, majoring in Psychology. She aspires to be a clinical neuropsychologist. Growing up she played many instruments including the guitar and clarinet. She is a research assistant for the CALM lab, where the goal is to examine the effects of different music interventions on cognitive and motor outcomes in adults. Outside of the laboratory, she is part of the Global Health Impact Fellowship. In addition, she likes to spend time with her family and friends, play guitar, and stay active in her free time.
Kadence Relente
Kadence Relente is a third-year Honors student majoring in Biomedical Sciences who
is
pursuing the pre-medical track to eventually become a physician. She is the current
Vice President Internal for Asian Students in America (ASiA) and serves on the Marketing
Committee for the Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity at Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV. Kadence is also a Patient
Assistant Liaison at the Baycare Wesley Chapel Hospital Emergency Department. Kadence
comes from a choral background where she participated in various treble/show choirs
for 5 years, such as the Hillsborough All-County Chorus, Tri-M Music Honor Society,
and Lumina Youth Choirs (LYC) as an alto and soprano. Most notably, she has performed
alongside LYC and the Florida Orchestra in the Straz Center for the Performing Arts
and Mahaffey Theater for their annual Holiday Pops concerts and the National Anthem
for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Manal Lamouine (assistant professor)
Manal Lamoiune is teaching fellow at Al Akhawayn University Ifrane, Morocco, a liberal arts institution. As a Fulbright alumna at the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV, she led her research project under the supervision of Dr. Jennifer Bugos at Lab. Her Ph.D. research investigated the benefits of musical training on executive functions in adulthood. She conducted three main studies, the first of which involved translating and validating the first Arabic measure of musical sophistication. The second study examined the executive function performance of young and early middle-aged musicians and non-musicians in Morocco. The third study in Manal's Ph.D. research compared the performance of musicians and non-musicians on executive functions tasks among the American population, using a 76-channel EEG system to measure their neurophysiological responses.
Manal is focused on improving her skills in experimental research and neuroimaging techniques, aiming to advance her expertise in these areas.
Maria Gordon
Maria Gordon is a senior at Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV majoring in Health Sciences with a split concentration in Biological Health and Social/Behavioral Health, aspiring to become a family medicine physician associate. She grew up playing piano and has experience playing with bands for many years. Maria has also worked as a Medical Assistant and Scribe where she learned clinical skills, patient communication, and pharmaceuticals. During her time as an undergraduate student, she has been shadowing an Infectious Diseases physician at Tampa General Hospital, volunteering at the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV Student Health and Wellness Center, working on E-Board for Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV Student Dance Production, and obtaining her Clinical Medical Assistant Certification with TGH. She is using her experience and passion to explore how music can influence cognition and the inner workings of the human brain in the CALM Lab. She hopes to bring forth a unique perspective and to serve others in future healthcare settings.
Medha Patel (Child)
Medha Patel is a fourth-year undergraduate student doing a concurrent degree in Biomedical
Sciences and Sociology at the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV on the pre-medical track
to becoming a physician in the future. She is currently the President of HOSA: Future
Health Professionals at
Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV (HOSA: FHP) and Secretary of American Cultured Desi (ACD) student organization
on campus. She is also a Child Life Volunteer in the Pediatric Oncology Department
at St. Joseph's Children’s Hospital. She prides herself in having a background in
music for over 15 years, playing both the violin and piano. She is a part of the CALM
lab’s Child Study project, where the goal is to examine how a music and visual arts
camp can impact the executive functions of children aged 8-12, and the parental perceptions
of children’s executive functions.
Mia Marasco (J Sax)
Mia Marasco is a fourth-year Honors student majoring in Biomedical Sciences and pursuing a minor in Child Behavioral Healthcare. Mia is studying to become a physician, specifically in either Gastroenterology or Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. She is a member of the elite medical fraternity Phi Delta Epsilon and is involved with their recruitment committee. Additionally, Mia works with children, ages 7-21, who have special needs through a program called Buddy Baseball, a recreational baseball league in Tampa. Mia is also an Ambassador in the Surgical Services Department at BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel. Lastly, Mia is a current student Brand Ambassador for Kaplan, a leading test preparation and education company. She is involved in the lab’s Saxophone Respiration Study, which examines the impact of wind instruments on respiratory development in individuals who have had COVID-19.
Fidel Galaura (Child)
Fidel Galaura is a fourth-year Honors student majoring in Biomedical Sciences, pursuing
a minor in Public Health and Health Administration. He is on the pre-medical track
and plans to eventually enter Internal Medicine. Fidel is a research assistant for
the CALM lab’s Child Study project, which examines the impact of a music and arts
training camp on the executive functions of children ages 8-12 and the resulting impact
on parents' perceptions of their children’s executive functions. To the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV student
body, Fidel is the current President of the Association of Filipino Students (AFS)
and the Vice President of Internal Affairs for Apex Interest Group at Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV. He has
also presented a research poster on the stigma surrounding HIV transmission in the
Dominican Republic. In the community, Fidel volunteers as an HIV tester at Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV’s BRIDGE
Clinic, a free student-run medical clinic for the uninsured. Additionally, Fidel serves
as the Tampa Area Chairman for GK NextGen, the student branch of Gawad Kalinga (GK),
an international Filipino-based charity that aims to end poverty through housing and
education initiatives. He plans fundraising events for GK’s initiatives and hosts
events to educate the community on the effects of poverty on personal well-being.
Fidel comes from a music-filled background, having played piano and guitar in his
youth. He currently enjoys performing cultural dances for AFS and has performed at
a national conference for GK in Houston, as well as at events in the local Tampa community.
Penelope Ubau (Child)
My name is Penelope Ubau and I am an undergraduate at the Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV (Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV), currently pursuing a double major in Art and Psychology with the goal of becoming a clinical psychologist specializing in art therapy. Throughout my academic journey, they have gained invaluable experience working with children, fostering a deep understanding of developmental psychology and therapeutic techniques. I am currently contributing to the Child Study, further honing my expertise in child development and therapeutic interventions. My passion lies in integrating creative arts with psychological healing, aiming to help individuals, especially children, navigate emotional challenges through expressive therapy.
