Geology Summer Field School
Geology Summer Field School
The School of Geosciences Geology Summer Field School introduces methods in field geology and geological research across a range of disciplines. Our Field School is split into four unique sessions. Each session involves doing geology in a research environment with faculty who specialize in that discipline. Each session provides an exciting opportunity for students to learn crucial skills needed by every geologist.
Sessions offered for 2025
- Field Hydrogeology
- May 13 - May 23 (In-Person, Florida)
- Structural Mapping
- June 23 - July 4 (In-Person, Idaho)
- Field Geophysics
- July 7 - July 18 (In-Person, Idaho)
- Intro to Mapping with Volcanology
- July 21 - August 1 (In-Person, Idaho)
Coastal Geology will not be offered in 2025 but will return in 2026.
Each field session counts for 2 credit hours and lasts two weeks. Students meeting the required 6 credit hours for the B.S. in Geology should register for 3 sessions. A permit is required from the School of Geosciences before you can enroll in the session(s) of your choice. All students interested in enrolling must have a permit and must have fulfilled the prerequisites listed for the session(s) you are requesting admission to.
It is important to realize that each session will be very time-consuming, and it will not be possible to be registered, concurrently, in other summer courses.
Non-Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV students are welcome to enroll in any of the field school sessions. Enrollment is open to all undergraduate geology majors who have fulfilled the required prerequisites. Non-Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV students are responsible for paying Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV tuition and activity fees for each session attended. Please check with your undergraduate advisor to ensure that the field school fulfills your graduation requirements.

All field sessions will be charged an activity fee during the 2 weeks of the course. For Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV degree-seeking students, the activity fee will not exceed $600 per field session. This fee is in addition to regular tuition and a $87 laboratory fee, which is billed to your Student Self-Service account when registering. The activity fee will be the same amount for each field session. Please see the table above for estimated total cost.
Some additional expenses will be incurred. Airfare and other travel expenses to a designated field headquarters is not included in the fee and must be provided by each student. For the Idaho courses this means travel to a meeting site in Idaho Falls. Non-Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV students must pay an application fee as a non-degree seeking student. Details will be provided well in advance for every session.
